The comprehensive UF Health Pediatric Hypertension Practice is designed to diagnose and treat infants, children and teenagers with known or suspected hypertension. It combines the expertise of UF pediatric specialists with the specialized resources of UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital to offer a unique service for children.
We offer:
- A comprehensive evaluation by a physician specially trained in pediatric hypertension.
- Specialized testing, including 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, radiology exams (ex. echocardiogram), and laboratory testing
- Long-term monitoring by our hypertension specialists
Common Hypertension Questions
What is hypertension?
Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is when the blood pressure is persistently above the normal range for age.
Can children have hypertension?
Yes. Children can also have hypertension.
What causes hypertension in children?
In children, the common cause for hypertension is often related to an underlying kidney disease. However, other causes of hypertension include certain heart conditions and hormone problems. Hypertension may also occur without an underlying cause, especially in older children and in those with a family history of hypertension.
Are certain children at high risk of developing hypertension?
Yes. If there is a strong family history of high blood pressure, the child's risk of developing it at some point in their life is higher. Children who are overweight are also at an increased risk.
Is untreated hypertension dangerous?
Yes. Untreated hypertension may lead to heart disease, strokes, or kidney failure.
Can hypertension in children be treated?
Yes. Children with hypertension can be successfully treated with dietary changes, exercise, blood pressure lowering medications, or surgery, depending on the cause of hypertension.
