Inflammatory bowel disease is a lifelong chronic disease that includes both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. There are 1 million Americans living with inflammatory bowel disease, and one quarter of patients are diagnosed before they are 20 years old. The cause of IBD is not yet known, but we know there are many factors involved, such as genetic and environmental influences. Inflammatory bowel disease affects multiple systems in the body, including the GI tract, eyes, joints, skin and liver.

About us

The UF Health Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic consists of a multidisciplinary team of highly experienced and compassionate professionals who will explain the appropriate IBD treatment options and provide expert management of your child’s disease. Children and young adults with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis often require a combination of medications and nutritional support for IBD treatment. Our services bring together expert health care providers from different fields, including physicians from pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition, pediatric psychology, pediatric surgery, pediatric radiology, pathology, as well as specialists in nursing, clinical pharmacy, social work and child life specialists. The collaboration includes weekly meetings to discuss various aspects of your child’s health, where we develop individualized plans for each IBD patient.

Patient care

We work with children and young adults through all stages of treatment. As part of our focus, we help build skill sets and set responsibility expectations to help young adults one day transition to adult gastroenterology. Our program offers the most up-to-date diagnostic testing available at academic pediatric centers, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, video capsule endoscopy, magnetic resonance enterography (MRE), as well as genetic and serologic testing.
