Transplant Center: Overview
Since June 25, 1966 when we performed the state of Florida’s first kidney transplant, the UF Health Shands Transplant Center has been an industry leader in transplant medicine, and its staff has provided unparalleled expertise in highly complex, life-saving treatments for patients around the world.
In 2021, UF Health Shands performed 452 organ transplants, a new record for the institution. Our liver program is ranked the highest in the nation by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). Our lung program is ranked #5 in the nation by the same registry.
With a combined total of more than 8,000 organ transplants performed, our team has the experience and expertise to provide patients with the best transplant experience possible.
The UF Health Shands Transplant Center uses a coordinated team approach to care, with over 100 staff members dedicated to assisting our patients and their families through every phase of the transplant journey — from pre-transplant to lifelong post-transplant care. These team members include medicine physicians; surgeons; nurses; financial coordinators; donor coordinators; administrative support staff; social workers; physical and respiratory therapists; and psychologists.
