Adult Transgender Health

At UF Health, we aim to provide compassionate, evidence-driven care for our patients of the transgender and gender non-binary communities. Our multidisciplinary approach allows our patients to work with a physician to develop a care plan that meets their specific needs. Our team is committed to providing comprehensive primary care, hormone management, behavioral health, surgical services and more.

In addition to providing expert care, we strive to be personal partners. Our mission is to create a comfortable environment to support the personal and medical needs of our patients and their families.

Services

UF Health is committed to improving the health and well-being of transgender and non-binary individuals in the communities we serve. We follow the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s (WPATH) Standards of Care and offer a comprehensive suite of services, from primary care to surgical care, mental health services and more. UF Health offers this broad spectrum of services to ensure all our patients’ needs are addressed while delivering compassionate care that leaves our patients feeling safe and confident in the care they receive.

Primary care

The physicians at UF Health provide a comprehensive range of primary care services, such as routine health screenings and management of chronic medical conditions, as well as services such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), STI screening and pelvic exams. We provide a welcoming and personable environment where you can be sure that your physician is meeting your specific needs. Our physicians who specialize in transgender care can help each patient meet their health goals and provide referrals for any clinical specialization required.

Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy is often the first medical step for those seeking gender-affirming care. Hormone therapy refers to the use of medications to increase or suppress feminine or masculine hormones depending on what your goals are. Therapy can take many forms and may look different for each individual depending on their body and goals. Though many individuals desire rapid changes, it is important to remember that the extent and effect of the therapy depends on many factors and takes place over months and years.

Hair removal

Hair removal procedures can be another option for transgender individuals. When it comes to managing unwanted hair, each patient has specific needs, and we’ll discuss those with you to find the best option. While there are temporary options (epilation or depilatories), there are also more permanent options (laser hair removal or electrolysis).

Mental health services

Here at UF Health, your mental health is our top priority. Mental health services are available to patients seeking support during social, medical or surgical transition. Positive physical outcomes are dependent on mental health, so this needs to be addressed with patients seeking help as it pertains to gender identity, coming out/social transition and general mental health issues.

OBGYN services

Our OBGYN team offers a comprehensive range of preventive care services, including pap smears, STI testing, pelvic exams, ultrasounds and blood work. It can also answer any questions related to pregnancy, sex, reproductive health and infertility, among other concerns.

Surgical care

Our surgical specialists provide a wide range of gender-affirming surgical procedures to meet an individualized treatment plan specific to your needs. Performed by the expert physicians at the UF Health Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center, surgical procedures include feminizing mammoplasty, male chest reconstruction and facial feminization. Additionally, UF Health Gynecology offers hysterectomy and oophorectomy while Urology offers orchiectomy. Of note, at this time we do not offer phalloplasty or vaginoplasty, though we hope to at some point in the future.

Urology

Once patients undergo gender affirmation surgery, urinary complications such as stricture, stenosis and fistula are common. The urologists at UF Health work hand in hand with the UF Health Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center and other members of our multidisciplinary team to carry out gender affirmation procedures with the outcomes you expect. Follow-up care is also available, as you can see our urologists for prostate screening or other urological issues.

Voice therapy

Voice therapy can help change the way one speaks to match your gender expression. Our speech language pathologists will individualize treatments to address not only your voice but overall communication. Trying to change your voice on your own can have negative consequences, such as sounding raspy or losing your voice. Our experts can help you stop behaviors that are harmful to your voice and instruct safer ways to speak and communicate in a way that you’re comfortable with.
