Stephen D. Lucas, MD, joined the University of Florida faculty in 2006 as an assistant professor of anesthesiology at the College of Medicine. He became an associate professor in 2013.

Dr. Lucas received his bachelor’s in biological sciences from Florida State University in 1983. He then attended UF where he obtained his medical degree in 1987. He received post-doctoral training as an internal medicine intern at the Jacksonville Health Education Program in Jacksonville, Florida. Upon completing his internship, he began his residency in anesthesiology at UF.

Dr. Lucas has been board-certified in anesthesiology since 1992 and in pain medicine since 1996. At UF, Dr. Lucas has held a number of leadership roles. He was the medical director of the UF Health Shands Hospital operating room from 2009 to 2012. In 2010, he became the chief of the division of regional anesthesiology and perioperative pain medicine and took on the additional responsibilities of the chief of pain medicine in 2014. He now serves as the Associate Chair for Pain Medicine of the Department of Anesthesiology and as the Medical Director of UF Health Pain Management- Ayers and of Pain Medicine Clinics.

Dr. Lucas is an active member of several professional societies. Since 1986, he has been a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. By 2007, he joined the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesia and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia. He is also a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Dr. Lucas has contributed to several books, refereed publications and abstracts. He has also presented at more than 40 conferences on local, state, regional, national and international levels since 2003.
