UF Health Orthopaedic Oncology is a specialized program that provides care for patients with cancerous tumors that affect the bones, soft tissue, joints, as well as metastatic cancer that has spread to the bones. Our team of bone cancer experts includes fellowship-trained orthopaedic oncology surgeons, pathologists, adult and pediatric oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, general and thoracic surgeons, nurses, therapists and social workers. This multidisciplinary team meets on a weekly basis to nurture our communication and deliberate the intricate needs of our patients.

Our goal is to provide comprehensive, personalized care for patients with orthopaedic oncology diagnoses. We offer a range of treatments, including orthoapaedic surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, to help patients manage their cancer and improve their quality of life.

What types of tumors can be treated by an orthopaedic oncologist?

Orthopaedic oncologists can diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal tumors, including:

  • Primary bone tumors, also called a musuloskelatal tumor, which start in the bone
  • Soft tissue tumors, which can occur in muscles, tendons and other soft tissues
  • Metastatic bone cancer, which occurs when cancer cells from another part of the body spread to the bones

If the tumor is malignant, it is considered a sarcoma.

Advancing Orthopaedic Oncology Research Forward

The researchers and physicians at UF Health are dedicated to researching the most effective ways to treat orthopaedic oncology conditions at the Musculoskeletal Oncology and Stem Cell Laboratory at UF. Additionally, the Enneking - Anspach Research Center dedicated to the study of musculoskeletal pathology and disease. It contains an extensive, world-renowned collection of bone and soft-tissue orthopaedic pathology samples.

The UF Health Cancer Center received designation from the NCI because of the exceptional, multidisciplinary care the Cancer Center delivers to patients and the leading-edge clinical research conducted by its faculty. Our providers across the spectrum of cancer care work together to provide personalized care to our urologic cancer patients. Cases are presented at weekly tumor boards which are attended by physicians across multiple departments, so they can work together to develop the best treatment plan possible.
