Blood banking (also called transfusion medicine) is a branch of medicine that involves the laboratory examination of blood for therapeutic purposes to ensure the safety, purity and potency of blood components for transfusions or apheresis. A pathologist who specializes in blood banking ensures adequate blood supply and proper blood utilization in the hospital, in addition to maintaining donor and patient safety. This subspecialist directs clinicians in the preparation and safe use of specially prepared blood components, including red cells, plasma, cryoprecipitate, platelets and other transfusion or blood- or marrow-derived transplant cells.

The UF Health Blood Bank and Transfusion Services unit responds to the needs of patients and the physicians who serve them by providing quality products and services, continually improving the quality and efficiency of our operations, and offering meaningful educational experiences for current and future practitioners.
