Social Mission & Community

Community Service

UF Health proactively reaches out beyond the walls of our hospitals and clinical practices to share valuable health information with area residents.

We offer health education programs and events and also partner in community efforts. We support civic, social and cultural programs to raise awareness of health issues and promote wellness. We bring UF Health physicians, dentists, nurses and other providers and experts into the community to speak about specific health and wellness topics at seminars, and to offer disease-prevention information and screenings at community health fairs and other outreach events.

Charity care and social responsibility

Our commitment as a responsible, accountable steward of our resources is the cornerstone of UF Health's not-for-profit mission. In Fiscal Year 2019, we spent a combined $254.9 million in unsponsored charity care (at cost) and social responsibility efforts across its Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses. We spent $48.5 million on health professional’s education; $15 million on scientific and clinical research; $5.7 million for community and regional health services; and $1.4 million on donations and in-kind services.

Supporting Our Communities

We care for the state's neediest residents

  • UF Health is Florida's only health care system with two statutory teaching hospitals that are part of the state's "safety-net" hospital system, caring for people who have little or no medical coverage. UF Health spent approximately $174 million in unreimbursed charity care at cost. UF Health is one of Florida's largest Medicaid and charity-care providers.

We play a key role in emergency and trauma care as well as disaster-response efforts

  • UF Health is the only health care system in the Southeast with two Level 1 Trauma Centers.

We support local agencies and civic organizations that benefit our communities

  • Our employees raise hundreds of thousands of dollars each year with our community-support efforts. Some of our many beneficiaries include the United Way, the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association.

We support identification and building awareness of community health needs

In order to meet identified needs, Shands has selected areas of emphasis for focused resource deployment.
