UF veterinary pathology resident honored for scholastic achievements

Jere Stern, D.V.M., a third-year clinical pathology resident at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, has received the C.L. Davis Student Scholarship Award in recognition of her scholastic achievements.

Given annually by the C.L. Davis Foundation, the award was presented to Stern during the annual meeting of the American College of Veterinary Pathology, held in November in San Antonio, Texas. The foundation has offered the award since 1976 to postgraduate students or residents-in-training in veterinary pathology to recognize scholarship.

Sarah Beatty, D.V.M., a clinical assistant professor and board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist at UF, and Mary Leissinger, D.V.M., a former UF faculty member in veterinary clinical pathology, nominated Stern for the award.

“Dr. Stern is a highly valued member of our pathology team,” said Beatty, who also serves as residency coordinator for the clinical pathology service. “Her positivity and passion for pathology are infectious, and a reliable source of inspiration for the entire service.”

As a resident, Stern is “quick to take on new teaching roles in interdisciplinary rounds and in the classroom or clinic,” Beatty added. “She has taught students in every phase of our curriculum and has taken the lead on peer teaching initiatives with our oncology, internal medicine, anatomic pathology and laboratory animal services. A strong sense of self-awareness and critical thinking are needed to excel in any profession, and she consistently demonstrates both.”

Stern received her D.V.M. degree in 2017 from the UF College of Veterinary Medicine and entered the clinical pathology residency program that same year.
