Pharmacy students organize wellness fair at HealthStreet

University of Florida College of Pharmacy student organizations are working with HealthStreet to host a spring community wellness fair from 4-6 p.m. April 1.

The event will include free health screenings and feature educational health messages for the community. HealthStreet is a community engagement program run by the department of epidemiology in the UF College of Medicine and the UF College of Public Health and Health Professions.

The wellness fair is the inaugural event to be held at the HealthStreet facility in partnership with the UF College of Pharmacy American College of Clinical Pharmacology, or ACCP, and the UF Student National Pharmaceutical Association, or SNPhA.

“HealthStreet has so much to offer our community members,” said Vicki Piazza, HealthStreet’s manager. “Every day, our community health workers connect people to medical and social services, and offer opportunities to participate in health research at UF so their voices are heard. This event is just another wonderful way to share information with the community in partnership with the UF College of Pharmacy.”

The spring wellness fair will include blood glucose testing, cholesterol checks, vision screening, HIV testing, cooking demonstrations and information about many health issues.

Lacey Nilles, a UF pharmacy student and the vice president of SNPhA and ACCP, is coordinating the event.

“The fair is just a great collaboration between our organizations and the HealthStreet program,” Nilles said. “It’s a great way to promote HealthStreet’s community engagement efforts.”

Along with the free health screenings and education, the fair will also feature children’s activities such as arts and crafts, cornhole, three-legged races, nutrition trivia, chalk doodling and a vegetable and fruit-eating contest. John Markowitz, Pharm.D., a College of Pharmacy professor with a specialty in psychiatry, will be sharing information about mental health during the fair.

The HealthStreet facility is at 2401 SW Archer Road. The Cilantro Tacos food truck will sell food at the event.

Although registration isn’t required, attendees are encouraged to sign up by calling 352-294-4880.
