Interim chairman appointed for emergency medicine in Gainesville

Dr. Joseph Adrian Tyndall has been appointed interim chairman of the University of Florida College of Medicine's department of emergency medicine, effective Aug. 15. He takes over the post vacated by Dr. David C. Seaberg, who last week was named dean of the University of Tennessee's regional medical campus in Chattanooga.

Appointed by UF College of Medicine Dean Bruce Kone, Tyndall is a clinical associate professor who also serves as the department's vice chairman.

"Dr. Tyndall is ideally suited to take on this new role," Kone said. "We're fortunate to have a faculty member with his broad-based experience, talent and drive ready to assume these responsibilities."

Tyndall is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he also completed residency training in emergency medicine and served as chief resident. He also holds an executive master's degree in public health with a concentration in health services management and health care policy from Columbia University.

Before joining UF this past November, Tyndall worked at Brooklyn Hospital Center and at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. With medical faculty appointments at Cornell University and the State University of New York Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, he directed medical student and resident training in emergency medicine and also directed clinical operations at Brookdale's busy Level 1 urban trauma center in Brooklyn.

Tyndall is board-certified in emergency medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Kone praised Seaberg, who headed UF's Gainesville-based emergency medicine program since 2000 and oversaw its growth as an offshoot of a larger department at the medical school's regional campus in Jacksonville. Seaberg led the development of a residency training program in Gainesville and served in leadership roles in emergency medicine on the state and national levels.

"The department of emergency medicine on our campus has flourished during Dr. Seaberg's seven years here," Kone said. "He will make an outstanding dean, and we look forward to his continued advice and support."

Tyndall said Seaberg has done a "masterful" job building the foundation for future growth of the emergency medicine department. "I am looking forward to the privilege and the challenge of helping to shape our department's future," he said.
