UF pathologists help update important book series

Two University of Florida surgical pathologists are helping update one of the world’s best-known resources for cancer diagnosis, the 35-volume Atlas of Tumor Pathology published by the U.S. Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

William Murphy, M.D., a UF professor of pathology, is the lead author of Tumors of the Kidney, Bladder and Related Urinary Structures. Edward Wilkinson, M.D., a UF professor and vice chairman of pathology, is co-lead author of Tumors of the Cervix, Vagina and Vulva. The books are expected to be published in 2004.

Originally developed for use by the U.S. military, the atlas has become a standard reference popular with pathologists worldwide, Wilkinson said. Each volume is updated about every 10 years. Wilkinson and Murphy helped write the current editions of the books they are updating.

Wilkinson also contributed to an updated volume in the World Health Organization’s Pathology and Genetics textbook series, published in late 2003. Titled Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs, the work features dozens of oncology experts from around the world. Wilkinson was senior author for two of the book’s three sections on tumors of the vulva.
