UF College of Medicine faculty member recognized as outstanding teacher

A University of Florida College of Medicine faculty member recently was recognized by the Florida chapter of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine for his dedication to medical education.

Dr. Gene G. Ryerson, a professor of medicine in the pulmonary division, was honored this fall with the chapter’s Outstanding Teacher Award. Nominated by Dr. Phillip Toskes, chair of the UF department of medicine, Ryerson was then selected by a committee of chapter members to receive the award.

Since joining UF as an assistant professor in 1979, Ryerson has received numerous teaching awards within the College of Medicine, including Teacher of the Year eight times, the Clinical Science Teaching Award five times, and the Basic Science Teaching Award. He also has been bestowed three times with the college’s highest honor, the Hippocratic Award for Teaching Excellence, which is given annually by the senior class to the physician who best represents the ideals of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, in compassionate patient care and inspirational teaching.

In 1998 Ryerson was included in “The Best Doctors in America,” a book published by Woodward/White Inc. that lists doctors recognized by fellow physicians for their superior clinical abilities.
