What is neurosurgery?
Neurosurgery is a medical and surgical specialty that provides operative and non-operative management of disorders of the nervous systems, including their supporting structures and vascular supply. Neurological surgeons also evaluate and treat pathological processes that modify the function or activity of the nervous system. Neurosurgery encompasses multiple aspects of health care including the prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, interpretation of imaging, treatment, critical care and rehabilitation of disorders of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems.
What are types of neurosurgical disorders and treatments?
- Disorders of the brain, meninges, skull, including skull base, and their blood supply, including the surgical and endovascular treatment of disorders of the intracranial and extracranial vascular system supplying the brain and spinal cord.
- Brain tumors or nervous system tumors in both pediatric and adult patients that may be treated surgically, nonsurgically, or using stereotactic radiosurgical treatment.
- Disorders of the spinal cord, meninges, and vertebral column, including those that may require treatment by fusion, instrumentation or endovascular techniques.
- Disorders of the cranial, peripheral and spinal nerves throughout the body.
- Disorders of the pituitary gland, including tumors. Treatments may include medication, radiosurgery, or in some cases, transsphenoidal surgery or craniotomies.
