About me

As a hernia specialist, minimally invasive surgeon and assistant professor in the University of Florida Department of Surgery, I aim to create a premier abdominal wall and hernia center, a leader in offering leading-edge hernia surgery by using the latest techniques and technologies. I strive to perform large operations using small incisions because this provides patients less pain, quicker recovery and decreased risk of complications. I treat patients for incisional, recurrent and hiatal hernias, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

My training began at the University of Jordan in Amman where I obtained my medical degree. Thereafter, I relocated to the United States to complete a general surgery residency at the University of New Mexico and Tufts University School of Medicine Baystate Medical Center. Thereafter, I pursued fellowships in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining UF Health, I served in multiple roles, including the chief of surgery at Baystate Noble Hospital in Westfield, Massachusetts.

I have been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications, books and chapters. My research is focused on predicting poor outcomes of hernia repair to help surgeons identify risk of complications. My research allows surgeons to properly counsel their patients as to whether an operation is advisable or not and to take the necessary precautions to minimize risk of complications when necessary. Through this, I aim to create a robust training program to produce tomorrow’s surgeons and provide high-quality surgery for communities. Together, we can advance the field forward and improve hernia surgery outcomes.

When not practicing, I enjoy staying active by working out and weightlifting. I also like watching European soccer and reading legal thrillers.
