About me

I am a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained oculoplastic surgeon, subspecializing in Eyelid and Facial Cosmetic Surgery with a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. I am an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and the Director and Chief of the Oculoplastics Division at the University of Florida in Gainesville. I earned my medical degree from the University of Rome and completed an ophthalmology residency at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY where I served as chief resident as well. I subsequently completed a fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery at the world renown Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Previously, I was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in Orlando, Florida. I have served as Chairman of the board of directors of the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR) in Tampa Florida for two consecutive terms. In the 47-year history of LEITR, I was the first physician ever to be elected to this post. LEITR is a 501 (C)3 multimillion-dollar corporation and one of the world’s largest eye banks with a state-of-the-art research component on board.

My Oculoplastics subspecialty area of expertise is upper and lower eyelid surgery and most everything around the eyes and adnexa. For example, it includes blepharoplasty, ectropions, entropions, ptosis, browlifts, cysts and tumors, tear duct problems and reconstructive surgery which are covered by Medicare and most other healthcare insurance carriers. In addition, I perform cosmetic surgeries and non-surgical procedures, such as liquid facelifts using lasers, Botox®, Restylane®, Juvaderm®, Radiesse® and other fillers to improve the cosmetic appearance of the face and areas around the eye.

I regularly make scientific presentations, exhibit my work at academic meetings, and have published numerous articles. I am a contributing author to several texts on ophthalmology. I am the chief editor of Oculoplastic Pearls for the Ophthalmology Times and am on their editorial advisory board. I am also on the editorial board of the Annals of Ophthalmology. I am an experienced oculoplastic surgeon and have performed over 26,000 procedures thus far. I have been selected as one of America's top ophthalmologists/oculoplastics ten years in a row by Consumers' Research Council of America. I have traveled worldwide as a Course Director teaching state-of-the-art surgery to other eye doctors, and refractive and plastic surgeons. I served as the Medical Director of three medical companies and sat on several boards as an officer and a director prior to joining the medical faculty in the department of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

I was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, practiced Ophthalmology in Pennsylvania over 20 years and was an officer in the US Army Reserve. My hobbies include tennis, golf, wine-making, travel, theater, fine dining and sporting events. My passions, other than family, are science, medicine and patient care.
