Biography

Desiree “Desi” Machado, MD, is trained in pediatric critical care medicine. Born in Brazil, Dr. Machado earned her medical degree at Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, and completed her pediatric and pediatric intensive care residency at Hospital da Crianca Santo Antonio in Brazil, a medical center that specializes in caring for children with congenital heart disease. 

She completed her neonatal intensive care unit fellowship as a chief fellow in 2012 where she had the opportunity to develop award-winning clinical and laboratory research projects.Following the completion of her fellowship, she served another fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at the same institution. She then moved to Toronto to work as a pediatric critical care fellow at The Hospital for Sick Children. Her training in NICU and PICU focused on children with heart disease and ECMO. At the UF Health Congenital Heart Center, Dr. Machado is a clinical assistant professor of pediatric critical care medicine within the department of pediatrics. She has been actively involved in organizing a number of multidisciplinary educational activities such as pediatric cardiac intensive care unit core-lectures, CPR teaching to parents and EZ-IO skill stations.She is also engaged with developing a number of policies and procedures for patient safety, and is part of the NPC-QIC home monitoring program for single ventricle patients. Her clinical interests include ECMO, anticoagulation, transition of care and nutrition of neonates with heart disease.
