About me

My name is Dr. Forsmark, and I am chief and a professor of medicine in the University of Florida Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition. I am board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. My clinical and research interests, include acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic function and function testing, biliary and pancreatic malignancy, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy.

I earned my medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed my internal medicine residency, gastroenterology fellowship and research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Upon completion of my training, I was recruited to UF by my mentor Dr. Phillip P. Toskes and remained here since. In 2022, I was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UF College of Medicine.

I currently sit on the editorial boards for Gut, Pancreas, Pancreatology, Digestive Diseases and Sciences and World Journal of Gastroenterology, and am editor of the Pancreas Section in Current Gastroenterology Reports. In addition to these positions, I served as chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine Gastroenterology Board, the Pancreatic Disorders Section of the American Gastroenterologic Association and the AGA Institute Education and Training Committee, and served as president of the Florida Gastroenterologic Society and the American Pancreatic Association, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Currently, I am chair of the National Pancreas Foundation Board of Directors.

Additionally, I am the UF Principle Investigator (PI) and co-chair of The Consortium for the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes, and Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Centers, a UO1 grant that is jointly funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Cancer Institute, supported by the National Pancreas Foundation and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I am also the UF PI and co-chair of the Type 1 Diabetes in Acute Pancreatitis Consortium – Pancreatitis Working Group, another UO1 grant funded by the National Institutes of Health, and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

The overriding objective of DREAM is to conduct a prospective longitudinal (36 months) observational clinical study to investigate the incidence, etiology, and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus (DM) following acute pancreatitis (AP).
