Description

Chemical peels use various topical chemicals to peel off the top layer of skin. Chemical peels are often used to treat sun damage, signs of aging and acne scarring.

Risks

Erythema, pain/itching during the procedure, peeling skin, dryness, scarring, cold sore outbreak, hyper/ hypopigmentation.

Before the procedure

  • Avoid topical prescription products, including retinols, for one week prior to procedure.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, you may need to be pre-treated with Acyclovir.
  • Avoid sun exposure for four weeks before and after your peel.

After the procedure

  • Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, peeling/picking the skin while healing.
  • Avoid sun exposure for four weeks before and after the peel.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and sweating until skin is completely healed.
  • Please speak with your provider before scheduling a laser treatment or any other procedure that may involve the treatment site.

Outlook (Prognosis)

Chemical peels are often part of a maintenance and prevention regimen.
