Dr. Allen is the medical director of the UF Health Shands E.R. Born in the Sunshine State, he went to a small NAIA university in Kansas City, Mo., to pursue his football career, but he realized after several injuries while playing quarterback (his 5-foot-10 stature wasn’t going to get him to the NFL) to pursue medicine. After graduating from Avila University with a major in biology, he attended Florida State University College of Medicine. He then made the move to Gainesville for his emergency medicine residency here at the University of Florida.
Gainesville has been home to him ever since. After finishing his residency and final year as chief resident, Dr. Allen was hired on as faculty with the position of assistant medical director. His major interests are the emergency department scribe program, observation medicine, emergency department quality and throughput innovation and cardiac biomarkers research.
