Bracing for the storm: Tips for staying safe during a hurricane

June 1 through November 30 is hurricane season, and as these storms approach, emergency medicine professionals share tips for weathering everything Mother Nature sends our way.

“The best way to avoid personal injury during a storm is to be prepared and follow the instructions of local authorities. Stay sheltered and don’t venture out into unsafe conditions,” says Thomas Payton, M.D., medical director of the UF Health adult emergency department.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends that you take the following measures to prepare yourself, your property and your family for the storm:.

  • Build an emergency kit, which may include food, water, snacks and other supplies.
  • Confirm a family communication plan. This may include identifying a family member or relative who lives out-of-state so members of your household can let that person know your family is safe.
  • Subscribe to alert services.
  • Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts to minimize flooding.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects — or consider bringing them inside. Stay indoors during the hurricane, and stay away from windows and glass doors.
  • Secure and brace external doors.

Be aware that rainfall and flooding may continue after the storm has moved out of the area. Continue to stay aware of your surroundings and listen to NOAA Weather Radio or your local news to stay updated. If you live in north central Florida, check for updates on UFHealth.org or the UF Health Facebook page during weather emergencies for local updates.
