Asthma in children: Approach to Care

Shands Children’s Hospital at the UF is one of a select few healthcare institutions in the country that maintains a Red Alert Program for children with life-threatening asthma.  The main objective of this program is to prevent death in children with this life-threatening condition.  Using specific guidelines to identify patients with life-threatening asthma, Shands Children’s Hospital at UF developed a comprehensive medical network involving emergency medical services, school workers, extended family members, local physicians, emergency rooms and a referral center.  The network provides early, aggressive medical attention and rapid access to care for patients enrolled in this program.  This program allows patients and their families to maintain a feeling of safety generated by the knowledge that a rapid response network exists.
